Assistant Professor of Economics at ISSSP, he has a degree in economics (2002) from the Faculty of Economics of the University of Porto and a PhD in economics (2010) from the same university. He became the first Portuguese economist to specialize in the economics of happiness when he defended his doctoral thesis "Three Essays on Happiness in Economics: Exploring the usefulness of subjective well-being data for the economic analysis of welfare". Since 2003 he has accumulated teaching and/or research experience, having collaborated with Católica Porto Business School, the Faculty of Economics of the University of Porto, ISCSP of the University of Lisbon, the Department of Economics and Management of the University of Madeira, NIPE and NIMA of the University of Minho, Universidade Atlântica and ISLA Leiria. 

He has taught courses on the economics of happiness in postgraduate courses and created an "Economics of Happiness" course in the economics degree program at the University of Madeira.

He has been a regular participant in international conferences on the economics of happiness since 2005.

He is a member of the Portuguese Political Economy Association (coordinating the association's northern regional branch), the International Society for Quality-of-Life Studies and Happiness, Economics and Interpersonal Relations (HEIRs). 

He has published in books and international journals and serves as a referee for international journals.

Since 2010 he has maintained a regular media presence (namely with opinion pieces in leading national newspapers) and is frequently invited to speak at conferences on the subject of happiness economics.

He is a permanent member of the Working Group for the Development of Macroeconomic Statistics of the Statistical Council.
