Abstract: This doctoral project addresses the general issue of abuse of the elderly based on the old people’s discourses and narratives of this phenomenon. It assumes that the elderly build diverse representations and narratives of what elderly abuse is, and that these vary according to structural type of factors (socio-economic profiles, health condition, level of independence, inter alia), and to individual trajectories and life experiences. The thesis also refers to the sub-assumption that the definition of the concept is inaccurate, in particular by reference to the WHO definition of elderly abuse. The research will be based on a comprehensive, qualitative methodological design, using the in-depth semi-structured interview as its main technique. The empirical population includes older people with or without a history of abuse selected from the project HARMED (PTDC/IVC-SOC/6782/2014), coordinated by Professor Isabel Dias, which will be coordinated with this thesis.
End beneficiaries/target population: the elderly
