Abstract: This project studies the changes in the dynamics of occupation and use of tourist activities since the period post-25th April 1974 until the current globalisation and its impact on the physical and sociological landscape of the Portuguese coast. A longitudinal study on the presence of photography in the tourist promotional discourse during that period is the basis for a critical analysis of its contribution in the process of construction of the tourist imaginary of the Portuguese coast. This survey will be complemented with an investigation on the impact of the dynamics of occupation and use of tourist activities in four regions of Portugal – the coastline of the District of Porto, Cascais, Faro and São Miguel – in the present time. This research proposes to contextualise the development of tourism in socioeconomic terms and highlight its role as a transforming agent of the physical and sociological landscapes.
