Abstract: This project seeks to deepen scientific knowledge in the sociology of political parties, investigating the process of institutionalisation of the Portuguese Communist Party, in the Portuguese social fabric, between 1921 and 1943. To deal with the problem of the institutionalisation of a party, we have defined the study prosopographical study of communist militants. This study will allows us to detect consistencies in the party’s social networks and, consequently, map the central nodes in the recruitment and spread of the ideas of the communist party. In the same vein, given the facts that marked the institutionalisation process, we aim to provide a framework of the web of relations between communist militants – not only party-wise, but also in view of the Estado novo and political repression. We therefore propose a methodological strategy that will be complemented by research techniques, from different areas of knowledge, based on an analysis at mesosociology level.
