About
The Emigration Observatory is an independent technical and research structure integrated in the Centre for Research and Studies in Sociology (CIES-IUL) of ISCTE-IUL, where it is based.
The Observatory was set up through a protocol signed in 2008 between the University Institute of Lisbon (ISCTE-IUL) and the Directorate-General of Consular Affairs and Portuguese Communities (DGACCP), and is supported by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs under a cooperation agreement signed in 2016.
The Observatory came into operation in January 2009 guided by three main objectives:
-
collect, streamline and analyse information on the development and characteristics of Portuguese emigration and the Portuguese emigrant populations, in particular by collecting data from statistics institutions of the emigration countries of destination;
-
disseminate all the information collected and promote its availability and discussion to the general public, in particular to researchers, students, policy makers and journalists;
-
work towards defining and assessing public policies on emigration based on information and knowledge about this area of intervention.
The Observatory’s webpage is the link with the public and is updated on a regular basis and gradually extended to cover all the activities that result from the implementation of the objectives for which it was created.
